QEMRF Emergency Medicine Research Workshop  - Insider Trading to Grant Application Success

Date: 21st of May 2010 

Location: Southbank, Brisbane Australia 

This workshop was run in conjunction with the Queensland Faculty of the Australasian College for Emergency Medicine at the 2010 Autumn Symposium. 

The topics covered during the presentations were: 

  • An overview of Grant Review Committee critiques – Catrina Codd, Research Manager QEMRF
  • The grant applicant perspective - Dr Gerben Keijzers, Staff Specialist, Emergency Department, Gold Coast Hospital, Assistant Professor, Faculty of Health Sciences and Medicine, Bond University
  • What does a Research Office at a University offer the Emergency Medicine Researcher? – Anne Louise Bulloch, Manager, Research Office, School of Medicine, University of Queensland
  • Overcoming the frustrations and barriers in Emergency Medicine Research - A/Prof David Taylor, Director of Emergency and General Medicine Research, Austin Health
  • One slide and three minutes; from the Winner of the UQ Faculty of Health Sciences 3 minute Thesis competition - David MacDonald, PhD Candidate, Centre of Clinical Research Excellence in Spinal Pain, Injury and Health, University of Queensland, School of Health and Rehabilitation Sciences, Division of Physiotherapy.

The workshop provided a summary of feed- back from expert reviewers on the strengths of successful applications. The session also highlighted the areas where applicants need to spend more time and focus when preparing an application. 

Included in the session was an outline of how University Research Offices can assist applicants and collaborate on project appli- cations. 

The information provided in the research workshop is useful for any grant applicant regardless of which body they are submitting their application to. 

Feedback indicated that it was well received with enthusiastic potential applicants eagerly asking questions in anticipation of fu- ture successful grant applications.
